Embracing Change

It’s been said that the only thing that is constant is change.

As much as I can be a creature of habit, I totally love change AND the reason for that is because change to me is synonymous with evolving. Evolving as a human being, as a friend, in a relationship, in a business – EVERYTHING.

Most know my favorite team is the San Francisco 49ers and man oh man did I love those good ole Harbaugh years. One of my favorite quotes Jim brought to the organization was “You are either getting better or you are getting worse, you never stay the same”.
I LOVE THIS.
When Jim Harbaugh came to the 9ers he brought an “enthusiasm unknown to mankind” that was just as infectious as winning became the standard.

I graduated college in 2010 and by the year 2012 I was just a young lad in my sales career. Not really knowing what I was doing or where I would be 5 years from then; I was motivated and driven by Jim Harbaugh (among other influences as well of course).
But really, I still to this day tell myself all the time the little harbaugh’isms. Here’s a good one…
“Who’s got it better than us?!” “NOBODY!”

One of my goals was to get a meeting with the San Francisco 49ers and pitch my small family run office supply business to them. (I’m also the guy that walked up to several Google campuses and pitched our office supply company).
I did get a meeting with both the 49ers and the Sharks. We were actually really close to landing a deal with the Sharks.
Back to the 9ers tho… I remember the day I was invited to what is now known as Levi’s Stadium. I got my very own tour and I even saw the players working out in the training facility. Getting my picture taken at the time with the Lombardi trophies made me feel like I was at Disneyland. Although I wasn’t able to close any deal with them at the time due to Staples having a league wide office supply account – I did have a great time “fanboy’ing”. Also, I’m proud to say now that in the past couple years Levi’s Stadium has become a client of mine and we’ve done several SWAG projects for them. So I mean it’s not like it was all for nothing 😉

It’s amazing to me to reflect back and think that was just 5 years ago. That’s not a long time at all. In my short sales career I’ve seen tremendous growth year over year (THANK YOU) and now I’m at a crossroads.
I believe as my good friend, Bill Petrie, would say “it’s okay to be vulnerable, not only that but it’s encouraged to be vulnerable”. So, here we go…

As you may know, I’ve slowly been building my personal brand / online persona as “SwagSam”. I’m at a point now where I’m getting ready to take it to the next level and replace my family’s brand of ValueBP (Marketing Group) with the SwagSam brand. This is a huge change and not an overnight change by any means at all. So, my faithful reader … I’m coming to you for your thoughts on this new direction…

1.) Own the Personal Brand: SwagSam
Below is an image for a new Podcast I’ll be launching in just a few weeks. I’m already taking the SwagSam brand pretty darn serious. The question is do I really want to have a business name that’s called SwagSam or maybe SwagSam’s?
OR as a couple friends jokingly (but interestingly) said…

Handle: SwagSam
Subtitle: SWAG by SwagSam

^ Now, c’mon that had to have given you a chuckle right? However, I don’t think that’s what I’m going for. I personally like the use of SwagSam in the business brand but I don’t think it’s really a company name. Your thoughts?

Here’s the cover art for the new Podcast launching soon:

2.) Be the BRAND HERO
I’m of the belief that my clients are the hero’s. I’m not the hero. I can help them out and that is exactly what I do. But at the end of the day, you – my client purchasing SWAG from our company is the hero because you are representing your brand and putting it out to the world in a positive and meaningful manner that resonates with your target audience. It’s my job to guide you through your journey and make you shine as the hero you are to your company and your clients.
However, after explaining this concept to some colleagues they made the point that it’s kind of confusing. BRAND HERO by itself just sounds awesome tho … doesn’t really matter if I’m the hero or they are. So, here’s where my heads at with this one…

Handle: BRAND HERO
Subtitle: w/ SwagSam

Recently, we’ve been playing with the art below on just a few marketing materials because we weren’t quite ready to release anything finalized quite yet (check out the Bluetooth speaker below with the BRAND HERO art… looks pretty slick, right?)

So, my faithful reader… do you prefer the SwagSam handle or the BRAND HERO handle?
I’m really excited to launch this and would love some feedback 🙂

THANK YOU!
